In May 2025, The Swedish Parliament (Riksdagen) passed a new bill regarding the financing and risk sharing for investments in new nuclear power development. The bill, that was sponsored by Moderate led coalition, offers government subsidies to companies who are planning to build new power plants.
Today, nuclear power is responsible for 37% Sweden's domestic energy production, followed by biofuels, hydro and coal. As Sweden moves away from fossil fuels and aims to become fossil fuel free by 2045, nuclear power appears to be the new direction.
Ahead of the spring budget changes 2026, the government seeks parliamentary approval to inject capital of SEK 1.8 billion ($195 million) and purchasing of majority shares in Videberg Kraft AB. The proposal will mean Videberg Kraft is owned 60% by the state, 20% by Vattenfall AB and 20% by Industrikraft AB.
Since Vattenfall is already a complete-state-owned company, the aforementioned proposal would imply a 80% state-ownership rather than 60%.
