On May 25, it was detailed that Swedish company Studsvik AB had submitted an approval application to build 2-4 new light-water nuclear reactors in Nyköpings municipality. The approval application is third of its kind since new law was passed two months ago, allowing the Government, in conjunction with municipalities, to assess and approve building new nuclear power plants.

This latest application is for 2-4 light-water reactors with an estimated effect of up to 600-1400 megawatts (MW). Through new nuclear power, Sweden aims to reach a minimum of 2500 MW by the year 2035.

"Progress toward the revival of Swedish nuclear power and an effective climate transition is currently accelerating. The fact that the government has received yet another application for new nuclear power clearly demonstrates that the legislative changes we have implemented are creating the right conditions for companies to invest in new nuclear energy," said Acting Minister for Climate and the Environment, Johan Britz.
